Tackling the issue of waste emerged as a prevalent challenge in the country, impacting the environmental condition significantly. Recognizing this, both government bodies and local organizations emphasize the importance of recycling waste materials.

Numerous initiatives across the Philippines are actively engaging in efforts to foster change and promote sustainable practices among Filipinos.

To cite, here are some local organizations you can participate in to be part of an eco-friendly movement, even in a small way.

1. The Blastik Project

In the Philippines, the problem of plastic pollution is a yearly concern primarily resulting from the improper disposal of individual litter, from the smallest to the biggest.

This has pushed the local organization ‘The Blastik Project’ to create such a team to help collect garbage in communities in collaboration with various barangays, local government units, small organizations, and companies.

The organization’s goal is to make the garbage useful again as they convert it into something new, such as bricks, tables, and chairs that are donated to far-flung areas, which are more compromised because of their geographical location.

For its previous beneficiaries, the organization is using a special technology that turns this garbage into little pieces, which will be used to make furniture in return.

2. Sentinel Upcycling Technologies

From having low-value plastic waste, the Sentine Upcycling technologies are bound to create high-value durable products that can be put to good use after consumption. The organization has a team that is bound to create used foiled sachets, plastic bottles, and tarpaulins into trolleys, trays, and crates.

With this initiative, the organization believes that individuals are more encouraged to use such durable and reusable material in their everyday lives.

To give an update to its donors, Sentinel Upcycling Technologies is providing real-time numbers of the rescued single-use waste to further push Filipinos to donate their trash to the organization. They also donate chairs to schools that are made from the collected plastic to provide assistance to students and teachers.

3. RMC Oil & Ecosolutions

To further expand the collection of used materials and address pollution problems, RMC Oil and Ecosolutions is an organization that gathers used cooking oil, waste coffee grounds, and coconut-based products to prevent their negative impact on the environment.

Through the organization, promotion of the proper disposal of these wastes is being implemented instead of individuals throwing them away from unwanted places or even on water bodies that can heavily affect the state of the environment.

RMC Oil and Ecosolutions has collaborated with different local parties to provide a schedule of collections to residential areas for them to encourage more people to engage with the proper disposal of these wastes.

4. The Plaf

Turning trash into shelters for the needy and portlets, the Plaf is an organization that accepts garbage and plastic donations that are bound to be created into something new in compliance with the corporate social responsibility program.

The organization also promotes ecoboards that are made from their collected plastics, which can be an alternative to the use of plywood when building houses. Through this, they are encouraging individuals to use recycled materials without compromising the quality of their homes.

The Plaf has partnered with different local parties and even businesses to promote its advocacy and is still going to achieve a larger number of collected wastes to turn into something useful.

These organizations are proof that there will always be something bright and useful in any trash that we see. We just need to be creative to look at different angles on how this trash can help not only us in our daily lives but also in prolonging the life of nature.
