Communities have more impact than individuals when it comes to environmental action. The shared knowledge, advocacy, and sense of responsibility of a community are important ingredients in creating a collective effort toward environmental conservation.

The United Nations (UN) highlighted that thousands of small-scale, community-driven initiatives are making a huge difference in people’s lives and contributing to efforts to curb global warming.

Thus, the importance of environmental community-based projects is promoted. The following is a list of projects your community can join and establish:

1. Community Garden

In urban areas, community gardens are on the rise in response to economic and social challenges. Citizens have the opportunity to cultivate their own food in shared spaces, which they later harvest when ready. These gardens have had a beneficial effect not only on people’s access to nutritious food, thereby enhancing dietary health, but also on promoting physical activity.

2. Communal Green Space

Parks, gardens, playing fields, children’s play areas, woods, and other natural areas are particularly beneficial in cities because they can lessen the impacts of pollution and alleviate the urban heat island effect, which refers to the retention of heat within densely developed regions. Additionally, the community can gather to participate in planting and maintaining green spaces.

3. Community Recycling Program

A recycling program is another effective way to engage the community in environmental initiatives. In the Philippines, for instance, several Local Government Units (LGUs) have implemented programs where plastic bottles are exchanged for essentials such as rice or groceries. This incentivizes community participation as individuals eagerly anticipate receiving something in return.

4. Bring Your Own Grocery Bag Campaign

Grocery shopping is one of the ways households accumulate numerous plastic bags. While large supermarkets have shifted to using paper bags, they may seem impractical, especially for frequent shoppers. Additionally, small enterprises may find paper bags too costly to afford. The most effective way to combat this is by bringing your own grocery bag. The community can be encouraged to adopt this practice through campaigns and ordinances that LGUs can implement.

5. Apply A Composting Method Of Waste Disposal

Improper waste disposal can harm both humans and the environment. Composting yields multiple benefits: it helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients, attracts beneficial organisms, and reduces the need for pesticides and fertilizers. The local government can launch a campaign to educate the community about proper composting practices, demonstrating its ease and numerous benefits.

Environmental community-based projects are crucial not only because of their impact on the environment but also because they foster various important aspects of community life, such as collaboration, resilience, awareness, and many others.

It has been proven that small solutions can still have a big impact.
