Iloilo City has joined the global Cities Race to Zero campaign, reaffirming its commitment to measurable climate action and a net-zero, resilient and inclusive future.

The Race to Zero campaign mobilizes cities, regions and investors to halve emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, in support of the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Mayor Raisa Treñas signed the commitment Wednesday at City Hall with European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) Executive Director Florian Gottein and Race to Net Zero Philippines Campaign Lead Dawn Cabigon.

“We commit to pursue net zero in the 2040s or sooner, set an interim target toward 2030, begin climate action within one year and track our progress annually,” Treñas said.

“Most importantly, we will work with our communities, businesses, schools and partners to create cleaner air, greener streets, better mobility, stronger resilience and a more livable Iloilo for every Ilonggo,” she said.

The ECCP serves as the official national accelerator of the United Nations-backed Race to Zero campaign in the Philippines.

The city was invited to join because of its initiatives in sustainability, resilience and livability, including green spaces, active mobility, mangrove rehabilitation, river protection, waste reduction, renewable energy, water security and community-based environmental programs.

As the “Bike Capital of the Philippines,” Iloilo City has also been recognized for its walkability and efforts toward sustainable urban development.

The city government said joining the campaign will strengthen its efforts to pursue climate action while enhancing its national and international standing as a climate-responsible and investment-ready city. (PNA)
