Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Boac District Jail are learning how to transform waste materials into useful products through a skills training on eco-paving bricks production conducted by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Mogpog.

The hands-on training introduced the process of converting shredded plastic and glass into durable, environmentally friendly paving bricks, providing participants with practical knowledge of recycling and sustainable waste management.

Acting District Jail Warden SJO4 Rolan Rabi said the activity is part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability and to equip PDLs with livelihood skills that may help them reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.

Participants were guided through the process of collecting, shredding, and combining waste materials before molding them into paving bricks that can be used for pathways and other community infrastructure.

“This initiative demonstrates how rehabilitation programs can also contribute to environmental protection,” Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Mimaropa spokesperson JO3 Joefrie Anglo said.

“By learning how to convert waste materials into eco-paving bricks, PDLs are not only helping address plastic waste but are also gaining practical skills that may support their livelihood opportunities once they return to the community.”

Anglo said the program reflects the continuing partnership between the BJMP and local government units in implementing initiatives that promote both environmental responsibility and inmate rehabilitation.

The BJMP continues to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders in developing programs that encourage skills development, environmental awareness, and the productive reintegration of PDLs into society. (PNA)
